  6. Claris, maker of the award-winning FileMaker Pro for Windows and
  7. Macintosh, has released the Windows version of ClarisWorks. First
  8. shipped as a Macintosh product in 1991, ClarisWorks for Windows
  9. maintains cross-platform compatibility with the original Macintosh
  10. version.

  12. Full installation, with tutorials and samples, requires only about 4MB
  13. of hard disk space. It makes it an excellent program for notebook users.
  14. Users can also read and save files to most other popular software
  15. programs in multi-platform environments. ClarisWorks supports over a
  16. dozen formats, so users can be confident that their data will remain
  17. useful to others and themselves if they need to use it in other
  18. applications.

  20. Works means it is an integrated package. You have word processing,
  21. spreadsheet, database and graphics all in one program. Claris has sought
  22. to redefine the whole genre of integrated works programs. While other
  23. works programs are integrated, they force you to switch between
  24. different windows and screens. ClarisWorks for Windows adopts the more
  25. sensible and natural approach of keeping all the tools right in front of
  26. you by means of its unique frame-based architecture. You simply click on
  27. the appropriate tool on the tool palette and create a spreadsheet,
  28. database, chart, graphic, or text area on the page. You can also edit
  29. anything you see on the page right there on the page, using the tools
  30. and menus that are always available. This also applies to creating,
  31. editing, and viewing headers, footers, footnotes, and anything else.

  33. ClarisWorks is simple enough for novices, but still offers capabilities
  34. they can grow into. Small/medium business and home office users will be
  35. productive from the start with all the basic business tools they need
  36. right in one product.

  38. ClarisWorks comes with a users guide, a getting started guide with
  39. tutorial, a quick reference guide, and a context-sensitive on-line help
  40. system.

  42. You can import text, word processing, and graphic files simply by
  43. dragging them from a File Manager window to any spot on the page. You
  44. have full control over graphics and text. You can rotate objects
  45. (including text), reshape or flip objects, duplicate selected elements
  46. with tracked distance, and more.

  48. The database environment in ClarisWorks is modeled after Claris's
  49. award-winning FileMaker Pro (which was reviewed in a previous issue of
  50. CTM). The word processing environment has some sophisticated  desktop
  51. publishing features, such as: linked text frames, rotated text, and easy
  52. placement of graphics; coupled with page layout capabilities it makes it
  53. easy to create: brochures, catalogs, flyers, or order forms.

  55. Supported file formats: ASCII, MS Word for DOS and Windows, WordPerfect
  56. for DOS and Windows, dBASE (DBF), RTF, DIF, SYLK, Excel, Lotus 1-2-3
  57. (WKS and WK1), ClarisWorks for the Macintosh, PCX, TIFF, BMP, WMF, CGM,
  58. EPS, and Macintosh PICT.

  60. This product is well constructed. The integration of text, spreadsheet,
  61. graphics, and so on is a seamless one. You do it almost without knowing
  62. it is done. All in one package, and all on one page entering and editing
  63. makes this a useful product for many.
